Skills Award

ENCLOSED SEA SKILLS

Undertaking Enclosed Sea Skills training is a useful way to improve your personal paddling skills, knowledge and confidence; or can be building block to attaining a guide or instructor award.

'Enclosed Sea' conditions are defined as:

  • Inside of estuaries, harbours, embayments or other sheltering reefs or islands Maximum of 2 nautical miles from shore
  • Wind conditions below Fresh winds (17 knots)
  • Breaking (whitecapping) waves (sea) up to 0.5m
  • No surf

Refine your paddling strokes, learn about and practice different rescue and towing techniques and gain confidence paddling in moderately windy conditions. The course also covers navigation, communication and weather interpretation relevant to sea kayaking.
