Guide Qualification

COASTAL GUIDE (SIT-ON-TOP)

The Coastal Guide (Sit-On-Top) award is designed for emerging outdoor leaders and school teachers with some paddling experience. Gain the skills and experience necessary to safely manage groups of novices in sit-on-top kayaks in coastal conditions.

The holder of this award is qualified to guide groups of novices on activity and day-based programs on SOTs in Coastal conditions:

  • Outside of estuaries, embayments or other sheltering reefs or islands
  • Areas of exposed coastline that are simple, not involving overfalls or tidal races
  • Maximum of 1 nautical mile from shore
  • Wind conditions below Fresh Winds(17kn)
  • Breaking (white capping) waves (sea) up to 0.5m
  • Surf to 0.5m

Elements covered in this course include (but are not limited to): equipment, paddling skills, rescue techniques, navigation, weather, tides, trip planning, risk management and group control.

Cost: Training Course $630, Assessment $300 plus Paddle Australia fees $170. Kayak and safety equipment hire is also available for an additional fee

ENCLOSED SEA GUIDE

Gain the skills and experience necessary to safely manage groups of novices in Enclosed Sea conditions safely.

The holder of this award is qualified to guide groups of novices on activity and day-based programs in sea kayaks in Enclosed Sea conditions:

  • Inside of estuaries, harbours, embayments or other sheltering reefs or islands
  • Maximum of 2 nautical miles from shore
  • Wind conditions below Fresh Winds 17kn)
  • Breaking (white capping) waves (sea) up to 0.5m
  • No surf

Elements covered in this course include (but are not limited to): equipment, paddling skills, rescue techniques, navigation, weather, tides, trip planning, risk management and group control, with a focus on guiding skills.

SEA GUIDE

The holder of this award is qualified to guide groups of novices on activity and day based programs in sea kayaks in Sea conditions:

  • Outside of estuaries, harbours, embayments or other sheltering reefs or islands
  • Areas of exposed coastline that are simple, not involving overfalls or tidal races
  • Difficult landings or open crossings may be included
  • Maximum of 5 nautical miles from shore
  • Wind conditions below Strong Wind Warning (26kn)
  • Breaking (whitecapping) waves (sea) up to 1.0m
  • Surf to 1.0m

Location: Perth and South West area (location is dependent on ocean and weather conditions).

Dates: Custom dates may be available, depending on instructor availability, please contact us for more info.

Minimum numbers: 2 people

Cost: Training Course $1000, Assessment $300 plus Paddle Australia fees $170. It is expected that course participants will have all their own equipment. A limited number of kayaks and safety equipment may be available for hire for an additional fee.
